A.1 Narrative Context Fill-in

  • Gaps in order of appearance:
  • Blank 1: → many (or "some")
  • Blank 2: → few (used contrastingly as "a few")
  • Blank 3: → many (or "some")
  • Blank 4: → many (or "some")
  • Blank 5: → few (refers to a small encouraging number)
  • Blank 6: → much (or "enough" / "some")

A.2 Identifying Missing Determiners

  • a) / Girl was sitting... → A
  • b) ...here and there for / person... → a
  • c) ...help her start / car... → the
  • d) / Man who was running... → The
  • e) Her for / minutes... → a few / some
  • f) ...if / no one comes... → (No determiner needed here, or edit context structure)

A.3 Editing: Correct the Determiner Errors

  • a) Once I visited a old palace... → an (vowel sound alignment)
  • b) ...was in a jungle of Malwa... → the (specific regional jungle)
  • c) ...and a palace was completely... → the (referring back to the same palace)
  • d) ...hidden inside the tall bushes, both of its... → their (refers to the plural bushes/pillars)
  • e) Pillar was completely destroyed... → Pillars (or change "both of its pillars were")
  • f) ...but the either eleven of them... → other (specifying the remaining count)

A.4 Sentence-Level Challenge (Few / Little)

  • 1. I have few friends in this city, so I often feel lonely. (Negative sense, almost none)
  • 2. Can you give me a little water? I am feeling a bit thirsty. (A small positive quantity)
  • 3. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing. (Idiomatic proverb)
  • 4. The few students who attended the extra class passed the exam. (All of that small, specific group)
  • 5. The poor man had little money to buy even a loaf of bread. (Negative value, practically none)

A.5 Distributive Challenge

  • 1. Each (or Either) side of the road was lined with beautiful trees.
  • 2. I enjoy reading every book written by this author. (Refers to the total collection collectively)
  • 3. Neither of the two sisters is ready to take the blame. (Rejects both choices completely)
  • 4. Each student was given a personalized feedback form. (Individual breakdown)
  • 5. You can take either of the two paths; both lead to the station. (One or the other of two options)
