PASSIVE VOICE

Passive voice is a grammatical construction where the object comes first, followed by the third form of the verb (past participle), and then the subject in the objective case, usually preceded by the preposition "by."

  • Object is changed into Subject.
  • Verb is changed into passive form, which is always the third form (V3) of the verb.
  • Subject is changed into Object.

If the subject or object is a Pronoun, it changes into the objective case as follows:

📌 Important Note:
When the subject is unknown, obvious, or unimportant, it is omitted from the passive sentence.
  • Active: They cleaned the room. → Passive: The room was cleaned.
  • Active: Someone has stolen my wallet. → Passive: My wallet has been stolen.
  • Active: People speak English in many countries. → Passive: English is spoken in many countries.
  • Active: They will announce the results tomorrow. → Passive: The results will be announced tomorrow.
  • Active: Someone repaired the car. → Passive: The car was repaired.

Process Writing (Using Passive Voice)

A. Pineapple Mousse

Bindu joined a cooking class where she learned to prepare a pineapple mousse. Complete the paragraph describing the procedure by filling in the blanks using the appropriate passive forms.

Ingredients: ½ kg of pineapple, 4 tablespoons of dried milk powder, 2 tablespoons of smooth cream, 1 packet of pineapple jelly, 1 teaspoon of fresh lemon juice.

Method: (i) Wash, peel, and cut pineapple into small pieces. (ii) Put ½ litre water in a pan, bring near boiling, add pineapple, and boil for a minute. (iii) Strain the water into a bowl and leave the pineapple pieces separately. (iv) Make the jelly as directed on the pack using some water left from the boiled pineapple. (v) Put the jelly in the refrigerator to set. (vi) Pour milk powder and lemon juice into a bowl and beat with a spoon until soft peaks form. (vii) Add the pineapple pieces and half-set jelly into this bowl. (viii) Fold the entire mixture and leave it in the refrigerator until ready to serve. (ix) Before serving, decorate with smooth cream and fresh pineapple pieces.

Paragraph: First, the pineapple was washed and cut into small pieces. A half-litre of water is put in a pan and brought to a near boil, then the pineapple pieces are added and boiled for a minute.
