DETERMINERS

A determiner is a word used before a Noun to fix, specify, or define its status or position within a sentence.

Classification Table

To understand determiners clearly, we classify them into five functional groups:

Category of Determiner Examples in Usage
1. Articles a, an, the
2. Demonstratives this, these, that, those
3. Possessives my, our, your, his, her, their, its
4. Quantitatives some, any, much, more, no, enough, sufficient
5. Numerals Definite: one, second, both
Indefinite: many, few, several, all
Distributive: each, every, either, neither

Specific Usage Rules

The "Few" vs. "Little" Logic

For Countable Nouns (Few):

  • Few: Not many (Negative sense; equivalent to none).
  • A Few: Some (Positive sense; at least a small number).
  • The Few: Not many, but all that are available.

For Uncountable Nouns (Little):

  • Little: Not much (Negative sense; equivalent to none).
  • A Little: Some (Positive sense; at least a small amount).
  • The Little: Not much, but all that is available.

Distributive Determiners

  • Each: Refers to every individual member of a small group separately.
  • Every: Refers to all members of a large group collectively.
  • Either / Neither: Used when choosing between exactly two options.

A.1 Narrative Context Fill-in

Complete the passage using appropriate determiners (some, many, few, much, enough):
